Why do I keep dreaming about my ex? It’s the question people ask me more than almost any other, and the answer is simple: the dream isn’t about your ex. It’s your dream, so it’s about you. Your ex is standing in for something in you that needs attention right now.
Think about the last time you dreamt about someone. I bet the first thing you did when you woke up was think about them. What does it mean about them? About us?
If you dream about a snake, though, you don’t think the dream is about that particular snake. You accept there’s a symbolic layer. People are no different… so let me show you how to work out what yours is pointing at.
“You cheated on me in my dream”

You wake up, your partner’s next to you, the sun’s coming through the window. You go in for a good-morning hug and they shrug you off. Cold. Distant.
Over coffee you start prodding. “Is everything okay? We went to bed happy last night.” Eventually they look at you, very stern, and say:
“You cheated on me in my dream.”

“What? No I didn’t! Last night I was riding a triceratops, shooting lasers at aliens!”
That dream your partner had was never about you. In the same way, if you’ve woken up from a dream about your ex with a strange feeling… that dream wasn’t about your ex.
Everything in the dream is you
When you’re in a dream and you’re in a house, who put that house there? Your psyche did. The weather, day or night, rain or wind… that’s your subconscious. You’re inside yourself.
That includes the people. The characters are made of the same stuff as the rest of the dream. They’re made of you.
Does that mean my ex is me?

This is usually where people push back. “So you’re saying that controlling ex, the one who hurt me… that’s me?”
No. The dream isn’t saying you are that person, or that you’re controlling. It’s showing you how you relate to that quality. How do you relate to control in your waking life right now? Are you trying to control something and failing? Is something controlling you?
So why show you your ex rather than just telling you? Because it’s much easier to see qualities in other people than in ourselves. You know the saying: when you point a finger at someone, there are three pointing back at you.
The emotion in the dream is always louder than the symbol. How you felt is the clue.
The one-word method

Here’s the method I keep coming back to, after working with dreams for over twenty years.
Next time your ex shows up, don’t ask what the dream means about them. Ask: what part of me needed their face so I’d pay attention?
- Strip away the story. The history, the breakup, the mess. You don’t need it.
- Reduce them to one word. If they were a single trait, what would it be? Loyal. Free. Demanding. Whatever comes first.
- Say that word out loud. How does it land? How does it feel?
That’s the message: how you relate to that trait in yourself.
Why an ex from ten years ago?

There’s a second layer most people miss.
Say you dream about an ex from ten years ago. You’ve had other relationships since. You haven’t thought about them in a decade. Why now?
I saw a post on Reddit from someone with two exes. The recent one, they thought about constantly. They missed them and wanted to dream about them. Guess who turned up in the dream? The one from ten years ago.
That’s how it works. Your conscious mind focuses on what it thinks is important. Your subconscious points you at what actually needs dealing with.
Dream characters can be bookmarks. They hold a place in the chapters of your life. When an old ex appears, the dream is opening those pages: what was going on back then, and how were you dealing with it? Something about how you handled things in that chapter matters now.
A real dream: the ex at the amusement park

Here’s a dream someone posted online. A woman in her twenties had been with her boyfriend for four years before they slowly drifted apart.
In the dream she’s at an amusement park, and she gets a sense she’s going to bump into him. Sure enough, there he is… with a new girlfriend. She goes over to confront them, they talk, and he walks off with his new partner. She feels two things at once: happy, and jealous.
She asked whether it meant she should get back together with him. Then she added, “For a bit more context, my ex is an Aries and I’m a Gemini.”
Let’s use the one-word method.
An amusement park is a great symbol for life. The anxious climb up the roller coaster, the thrill on the way down. It sets the scene: this is about her life.
She didn’t tell us much about her ex, but she did give us a hint. Before you roll your eyes, this isn’t about astrology. It’s that she handed us some traits. (I dated a Gemini for a while and married an Aries, so I know both energies pretty well.) Aries are loyal to the bone, fiercely protective. Geminis are clever and witty and have “two minds”. They can jump from one to the other.
Now look at the dream. She’s in two minds, with two feelings at once: happy and jealous. That’s the Gemini. The ex could stand for loyalty, perhaps. Only she can really know.
Is the dream telling her to get back with her ex? No. It’s telling her to get back with that part of herself. The jealousy is the clue. She was watching a part of herself walk away, one she’d lost touch with and wants back.
What to ask next time someone shows up in your dream

Remember your partner giving you the cold shoulder over coffee? Now you know what was going on. Their dream was never about you. That emotion was always theirs.
The same goes for you. Next time someone turns up in your dream, don’t ask what it’s saying about them. Ask what it’s saying about you.
Most of the time, the people in our dreams are a psychological mirror. The same goes for the people you admire or envy, which is what the golden shadow is all about.
Questions people ask about dreaming of an ex
Does dreaming about your ex mean you miss them?
Not necessarily. It usually means a quality they represent, or the chapter of life you shared, is relevant to you right now. Reduce them to one trait and ask how you relate to that trait today.
Does dreaming about my ex mean they’re thinking about me?
The dream is made of you, so it’s telling you about your own inner world, not theirs. It’s far more useful to ask what it’s showing you about yourself.
Why do I dream about my ex when I’m happy with my partner?
Because the dream isn’t about the relationship. Your ex is a symbol for a trait, or a bookmark for a time in your life, that your subconscious wants you to look at.
How do I stop dreaming about my ex?
Work with the dream instead of pushing it away. Recurring dreams tend to fade once you’ve received the message, so find the trait, notice how it feels, and see where it shows up in your life.
